Overview
Vietnam is recognized internationally as one of the most prominent countries in Asia. It is known for its beaches and rivers, located in the south of China. On the west, it is bordered by Laos and Cambodia. Vietnam is covered with thick forests – a perfect showcase of the greenery in the rural surroundings and the bustling cities. Hanoi is the main center that produces rice and millet in a huge amount because of weather conditions and topographical reasons. The Red River valley was formed due to natural geographic reasons and is an economic unit bounded to the north and west by mountains and jungles. Vietnam’s history has been more like a nightmare that to a great extent was responsible for ruining the country’s cultural values and socio-economic conditions. Natives have fought French colonialist rule to attain freedom and the wounds that are not healed still show when one interacts with the locals here.
Till the 1880’s the French Empire controlled Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. In the mid 19th century their poor leadership invited revolts from locals her. This was also the time that the country went through periods of floods and epidemics that degraded the economy further.
Years later the French signed a treaty which gave France the right to three Eastern provinces. After several wars that caused lots of damage, the country is now finally exiting its sketchy past. Today it is one of the fastest-growing countries in the world.
The history of Vietnam remains incomplete without the mention of the iconic leader named Ho Chi Minh who led the Viet Minh Independence in 1941 and in 1954 defeated the French army. After the war, he officially stepped down from power in 1965 due to health issues. Later, Saigon city was named after him to pay tribute to this great leader.
Vietnamese basically celebrate the festivals that are linked to Lord Buddha for example the natives celebrate Buddha's birthday. People visit temples and worship Lord Buddha and ask for more strength to overcome their problems. The temples are lit with candles and monks are served by the devotees to seek their blessings.
Other important festivals that are celebrated with fun and gaiety are the Mid Autumn Festival and the Lunar Year in which grand proceedings are taken out and people go out and celebrate such auspicious events with each other and give gifts to each other.
The two major cities of Vietnam are – Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Both cities are located in the Red River Delta. While Hanoi is the right place for some awesome street food, it offers a mix of modern lifestyle with a historic past. The other must-see place is Hoi An full of charming canals. Vietnam cuisine exhibits great diversity but it is subdivided into 3 primary categories. Rice is the staple food here. Rice grains are used to make fried rice, sushi, and rice balls. As per their culture, Vietnamese people do not waste any food element and store for utilizing the material another day. Vietnamese cuisine also reflects a mix of Chinese and French cuisine. The major mouth-watering dish is called as Pho which is actually noodles soaked in brisket broth brimming hot and is served with a variety of herbs and hot sauce to make it.
Vietnamese culture is recognized as one of the oldest cultures in the world. Through and through its culture has been influenced by China. After French colonialism Catholicism also became part of the country’s religious space though several restrictions were made in the past to maintain the superiority of Vietnamese over Catholicism.
In Vietnamese traditions, the clans are most valued in the country. The cultural space of the country is marked by high family values which are showcase when four or five generations sit down to chat with each other under the same roof. Clans are related to the bloodline and elders have the right to make decisions for their young ones. Nowadays things have changed drastically through with the youth taking decisions on their own.
