Overview
A town known for its fishing spots, Diu comes under the Diu district in the Dadra and Nagar Haveli union territory in India. It is the tenth least populated district in the country. The city is in the running for Narendra Modi's Smart Cities Mission funds. By April 2018, it was declared that Diu Smart City was the first Indian city to run on 100% renewable energy during the daytime. It was historically attached to the Saurashtra region of Gujarat and was an important trade route along the Arabian Seaports.

Mainly known for its fortress and Portuguese cathedral, Diu is a historical place and a spot of scenic beauty. There are beautiful white-sand beaches, like the Nagoa beach, Ghogla, Jallandhar, Chakratirth, Gomtimata. However, the most visited landmark in town is the Diu fort built in 1535. Apart from these, there are three Portuguese Baroque churches – the St. Paul's Church, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Thomas' Church, which is now a museum. On the Gangeshwar coast, there is an ancient temple of Lord Shiva. Therefore the city is witness to the holy amalgamation and calm acceptance of different religious and cultural associations. Other tourist sites include Naida caves near Jalandhar beach, only one kilometer away from the city center through Hadmitya Road. The place is famous for the natural sunlight show that makes the orange rocks glisten. The open amphitheater and sunset shots at Khukri Memorial near Chakratirth Beach are also known for their mesmerizing beauty. Diu also has a dinosaur park with life-size dinosaur statues, a bird-watching sanctuary, a sea-shell museum, a summer house, and Lover's Point's frequently visited.
Diu has 21,576 people, as recorded in 2001. About 46% of the population is male, and 54% is female. The city has an average literacy rate of 71%, which is below the national literacy average of India, which is 74.04%. 81% of the male population is literate, and the literacy average among females is 69%. People in Diu speak several languages, including Gujarati, Portuguese, English, and Hindi. Their lives revolve around tourism and fishing prospects, which are the major source of income for them.
Seafood is the major item in the cuisine of Diu. It includes delicacies like lobsters, fish, crabs, etcetera. Portuguese, Gujarati, Parsee, South Indian foods are also popular here.
Diu lies at the eastern end of Diu Island. The exact latitudinal and longitudinal dimension of the city is 20.710 N and 70.980 E. The island covers an area of 38.3 square kilometers.
