Located almost at the center of Nagaland state, Mokokchung is well-connected to the rest

of the state. It has six distinct hill ranges parallel to each other and is pointed in either the

northeast or southwest directions. This area is pleasant and mild for almost ten months in

the year. The maximum temperature is mostly in the mid-twenties. The monsoon in this

area brings about a lot of mist.

The mountainous area is known for its tranquil atmosphere with cool breezes, lush foliage,

and gurgling springs.

Jorhat in Assam, 105 km away, and Dimapur in Nagaland, 200 km away, is the closest large settlements to catch a flight too if you are planning to visit Mokochung. Flights from all over India arrives in these two places. Mariana railway station, one of the five main stations in Assam, is only 85 km away. There are also overnight bus options from Guwahati to Mokokchung.

Mokochung is the center of the Ao people. The Aos were the first tribe in Nagaland to adopt to Christianity. The Baptist church in the center of the town is one of the largest in India. Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims from other states can also be found here. Traditionally the Aos were animists who believed in the appeasement of good and evil spirits through practices like animal sacrifices. Through Christianity and Westernization by American evangelists, these religious sentiments have been removed. However, Aos

continue to celebrate their old festivals as cultural events rather than religious ones. Pork is the favourite Ao meat, and there is plenty of it in the traditional Naga food available in the small restaurants in this area. It would be best if you tried dishes with Anishi, fermented Colocasia leaves dried, smoked, ground with spices, and preserved as cakes. Axone is another Ao ingredient. It is made by fermenting cooked soybeans. They are then made into a chutney with tomatoes and spices or cooked with meat. Fermented preserved

bamboo shoots are made in almost all households by wrapping them in banana leaves for

about two weeks. These are added to meat and vegetable curries and eaten with steamed

rice.

It is a good idea to visit Mokochung during the Moatsu festival. After the sowing season in the first week of May, this three-day festival of dance, music, and people in traditional attire is a riot of fun, culture, and merry-making.For people who prefer quieter activities, a stroll and picnic along the River Dikhu are highly recommended. The waters are still and deep; the air is fresh and filled only with birdsong. The Mokochung museum is a fascinating place for history buffs. The history of the Ao people, their culture, and their lifestyle is explained with the many artifacts on display here. You will see the old swords, vessels, jewelry, and tools from the old days. The largest church in India, the Ao Baptist Church, also attracts tourists in large numbers. Previously, bamboo and thatched roof structure have now been replaced by a modern concrete buildings. Christmas celebrations in the church with traditional singing and festivities are quite a draw
