You need to book a train ticket from Mumbai or Karjat if available or make it boarding from Karjat in any train which leave from Mumbai to coimbatore.Coimbatore is the nearest Railway station to Ooty from where you can take a cab or Bus to reach the lovely hill station. Karjat is very close to matheran by cab 30 minutes journey or come to Neral and take Karjat local.If you plan to take a flight than you have to take Mumbai Coimbatore flight and onward cab or Bus.

Dear Mr Raut There are local trains between CST and karjat very frequently. Take the local train from Karjat and get down at Neral which will take 20 minutes from karjat and take a cab to reach Matheran which will be another 20 minutes.The toy Train service is also available from Neral to Matheran but Frequency is very poor.
Please reach Matheran only after Hotel booking as summer vacation is going on and on the spot booking will be expensive and will be difficult.

Matheran is one of the tiny hill station near Neral an hour and half from Mumbai. No Vehicle is allowed beyond central car park and then there is a climb to hill station. There are lovely points to see and enjoy but you cam move on horse or walk down. its refreshingly different. Food is superb in every hotel. its mumbais favourite weekend retreat along with Lonavala.

At this time that is 2nd week to 4th week of May, there is no monsoon in Matheran.
Generally Monsoon in Matheran & Mumbai begins after first week of June. By Meterological Dept. it is predicted that this year Monsoon in Mumbai & near by (Matheran etc.) will begins at first week to second week of June 2010.
There is little chance of very very scanty rain fall (pre monsoon showers) in end of May,
Nothing to worry about this pre monsoon rain. No disturbance would cause of this pre monsoon showers, rather one would enjoy this.

Panorama Point :

Coronation Point :
Coronation Point is situated towards the south of the post office. This place marked the coronation ceremony of King Edward VII in 1903.

Charlotte Lake :
Charlotte lake is located away from the edge of the hilltop. The main drinking of the town comes from Charlotte lake. You can see workmen hunching over strips of leather, fashioning the Kolhapuri chappal that Matheran is famous for. Leather bags, leather belts, leather shoes& the workmanship is exclusive and the prices reasonable. There are also glass birds and dried wild flowers for sale that have a quaint appeal.

In Matheran cars are not allowed, However you can drive from Neral to Dasturi Park. The Distance from Neral to Dasturi Park is 6 Km it is a (last point to which Vehicles are allowed in Matheran) and park your car at Dasturi Park (i.e Car Point) Car parking charges are Rs. 10 entry of car, and taxes of Rs. 25. The local transporation is Horse or you can do sightseeing by walk.

Due to ban on motor vehicles in Matheran the modes of transport in Martheran are limited to horses and rickshaws (pulled by humans), however seeing the various points in Matheran by walking is equally enjoyable.

Neral is on the mumbai pune train route and comes before karjat. Please take from CST or dadar Or thane Karjat local which are very frequent and get down at Neral and from there you can take a cab
or toy train which will take 20 minutes to matheran.

There is no toy train is available from Thane the toy train start from Neral Station & . You can come to neral from thane by our Local Train
Also Mini Bus Service started between Karjat , Neral and Matheran. The fare is Rs. 25.00 only. The travel time is 20-25 minutes approximately. So try the mini bus too!
Time Table : Matheran to Neral : 7.00 , 9.30 , 12.00, 15.00 , 17.15.
Neral To Matheran : 6.30 , 8.40 , 11.15, 14.15 , 16.45.

From thane take a karjat local and get down at Neral which is approximately one hour 30 minutes in train from thane and from Neral you can catch the toy train for matheran.alternative is to take a cab which will take 20 minutes to matheran, if you do not get toy train.Frequency of the train is not very good as most of the tourist prefer to travel by cab.

Most fast and offcourse most convenient transporation to Matheran from Mumbai is
Local suburban Railway.
Take Train for Karjat either from CST Mumbai OR Dadar or any other station on the way (like Kurla, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Thane) as per your convenience.
Get down at Neral station.
Trains to Karjat are at frequency of every 30-45 minutes during day time.
From Neral either take Mini Train for Matheran. There are only three trips of Mini Train from Neral to Matheran.
OR Taxi to Matheran, Taxi will take you upto Taxi Stand, Matheran City is about 3 KMs from Taxi Stand. No vehicles are allowed inside Matheran city. Either you have walk down or take horse ride (horses are available on rent)
If you have your own vehicle, then from Navi Mumbai you can reach Matheran.

The timings of the Neral - Matheran Toy Train which is one of the best ways to travel up. The journey takes around an hour and is one of the most enjoyable rides into the vehicle-free green hill station.
The trains leave Neral at 7:20 am, 9:00 am, 10:45 am, 12:10 am and 5:00 pm. The trains leave Matheran at 5:45 am, 9:50 am, 1:00 pm, 2:35 pm and 4:10 pm.

It is the most convenient and quickest way of reaching Matheran. A 24 hr taxi service operates between Neral and Matheran, and it takes only twenty minutes from Neral to reach Matheran by road.
Trekking:- Some people also cover the distance between Neral and Matheran on foot. The trip though arduous, can be quite exhilarating, as hikers mount the steep hills enjoying the scenic beauty stretched all around.

You Can go matheran from neral by road it will take 20-25 Minutes approximately & there are own vehicles allowed but you can drive by ur own till dasturi place where you park your own car & enter Matheran from left gate (Car Parking Charges are Rs. 10 entry of car, & taxes of Rs. 25) & from there you go by walk or hire a horse (which is more comfortable) it cost u Rs. 150-200 per horse.

Sunset Point (Also known Porcupine Point) is closer to Rly Station via Malet instead of Louisa Point.
But if you are already at Louisa Point before Sunset then you can reach Sun Set point by Visiting Malang Point then Coronation Point then Rustomjee Point and then Chenoy Point and finally at Sunset Point.
Other wise you can visit sunset point directly from Rly Station.

By Road : A very comfortable drive, by excellent expressway.
From Pune travel on Old Mumbai Pune highway. After you come down the Khapoli ghat, watch the for the small lane that goes on right. You will see the green coloured board indicating this right turn.This is chowk.
From Chowk drive another 11 Kms and take left turn. From this turn drive up hill to reach Dasturi after 12 Kms. Dasturi is a place where you have to park your car, and enter Matheran from left gate. Car parking charges are Rs. 10 entry of car, and taxes of Rs. 25.
Journey Time By is Road approx. 3 hours

You stay at hotel Rahi which is located at Neral railway station so If you go by mini train from neral it will take more than 2 Hrs. , which will drop you directly at Matheran Main City & it is more comfortable for you, other wise you can drive by ur own till dasturi place & from there go by walk or Hire a Horse (which is more comforatble) it will cost u Rs. 150 - 200 per horse.

From Taxi Stand (Dastur Naka) one has to walk till Central place (Market Area) in Matheran OR take horse riding. Walking will take 40 minutes to 1 hour.
Horse riding (If you konw horse riding then 10 minutes, Horse guided by horse keeper 30 minutes).
As in winter days are short. You need to leave Matheran (Market Area by 4.30 PM by which you can reach Neral before 6.30 PM which is quite safe timing.
25th Jan is Working day so there will be less crowd in Matheran but 26th Jan is Holiday and on 26th Jan there will be some crowd.

Travel by suburban / local railway train on Central Railway till Neral. From Neral you can travel either by mini(toy)- train till Matheran or by taxi. The train frequency is too problematic and there are only 3 or 4 small coaches so best is to go by taxi. From Dasturi naka at the entrance of Matheran you can walk for about 20 minutes and you will be in bazaar area of Matheran or you can go by horse.
You can go by your vehicle, too but then the roads are crowded and there is heavy traffic almost till Kalyan / Ambernath. And again you need to park your vehicle at Dasturi Naka and walk to the central areas.

Take Train for Karjat either from CST Mumbai OR Dadar or any other station on the way (like Kurla, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Thane) as per your convenience.
Get down at Neral station.
From Neral either take Mini Train for Matheran
OR Taxi to Matheran, Taxi will take you upto Taxi Stand, Matheran City is about 3 KMs from Taxi Stand. No vehicles are allowed inside Matheran city. Either you have walk down or take horse ride (horses are available on rent)
If you have your own vehicle, then from Navi Mumbai you can reach Matheran.

Baramati To matheran is 220km which you can cover in approximately4-5 hours driving time. you can take a train to Mumbai via pune and alight at Karjat and take a cab from there to reach matheran by Train if you decide travel. Matheran is a small hill station very close to mumbai and have several attractive points to see.you can do a hoirse riding which is the only mode of transport as no motor vehicles are allowed on the hill station you need park the car in the parking lot.

Cheapest way to reach Matheran from Pune is by Railway
Take Passenger train from Pune to Mumbai or Express Train haulting at Karjat, get down at Karjat, then catch local to CST Mumbai get down at Neral. From Neral you can reach Matheran either by Taxi or Neral-Matheran Mini Train. (Mini Train there are only three trips in a day).
Tourist Interested places in Matheran
are Echo Point, King George Point, Charlette Lake, Louisa Point, Panorama Point, Sunset Point, Heart Point and One Tree Point.
Tourist Interested places in Mahabaleshwar
Wilson point is the highest point of Mahabaleshwar and has three observation towers, which offer a splendid view especially of the sunrise. There are other points to which offer great view such as, Elphinstone Point, Babington Point, Kate's Point and Arthur's Point.
Connaught Peak or the Mount Olympia and Echo Point are few of other places that tourists love to visit.
Near by Mahabaleshwar:
Lingmala waterfall (6km), Dhobi waterfall (3km) and Chinaman's waterfall (2.5km).
There is also the Venna Lake, which is 2.5 km long and has boating facilities. Close to the lake are strawberry stalls and people can even go for little horse riding.

Its good that you are planning a vacation trip to Matheran, close to Mumbai. 3 days and two nights stay in Matheran is good enough to cover entire Matheran.
Matheran is small Hill station close to Mumbai.
From Neral Rly station (Mumbai-Pune Line) you can get Toy Train to Natheran Hill Station, during monsoon this route is closed please check with railway authority.
Other option From Neral get Taxi to Dastur Naka (Taxi Stand) no petrol diesel vehicles are alllowed in Matheran Hill station, if you have your own vehicle then you need to park at Taxi Stand. Railway goes till the central place in Matheran.
View points in Matheran are Echo Point, King George Point, Charlette Lake, Louisa Point, Panorama Point, Sunset Point, Heart Point and One Tree Point.
All these points you can cover either by walking in jungle (no aminal except few monkies) or by horse riding.
As mentioned earlier 3 days are good enough for Matheran, with one more day you can covers some places around matheran / neral like Suguna Baug, Emu Farming, ND Studio etc.

The drive is, Panchgani-Wai-Surur-then take NH-4 upto pune.
From pune take Mumbai pune old highway, upto khopoli- Karjat- Neral- Matheran or
take Expressway- Khopoli exit- Khopoli- Karjat- Neral- Matheran.
By Bus: Catch any Mumbai bus going via pune route, get down at Panvel (If bus is through Expressway) then Panvel-Chowk-Karjat-Neral-Matheran.
If bus goes via Old highway, then alight at Chowk.

You can come to pune from Panchgani which is not a long drive and then take a train from pune to Mumbai and get down at karjat and from there take a cab to matheran . alternatively take a local train from karjat and get down at neral junction and then take a cab for matheran. reason being that no express train from pune to mumbai stops at Neral which is very near to Karjat. by the way matheran is 20 minutes by cab from nral and on hill station there are no mode of transport other than horses as motor vehicles are not allowed. have nice horse riding see lovely points

Matheran is an ideal place for troughout the year, each season has its own nature beauty.
This season that is post monsoon is best season for Matheran, All green mountains, green grass every where. Day & night temperature is quite pleasant not too high, not too cold.
No mad rush as mid term examinations are around. You find lot of choices of hotels, negotiate for tariff- Off Season.
Caution : Do not go till edge at View Points as it is slippery, muddy after monsoon. Early morning there will little fog.
And finally wish very happy second honeymoon.

Matheran is hill station, main line station for Matheran in Neral on Mumbai - Pune line. From Neral Rly Station you can get Mini Train to Matheran or Take a Taxi.
Mini Train will take upto Central place (Market area) in Matheran from there you can get porter or coolie.
Taxi will get you upto Taxi Stand at Dastur Naka which is about 2 Km from Central Place in Matheran. From Taxi Stand you can get Horses to Central Place, negotiate with Horsewala to carry luggage with them OR you can get Porter or Coolie from Taxi Stand also.
Please note : Negotiate for Rate.
From Central place (Market place) most of the hotels at walkable distance (2 to 5 minutes)

Matheran is crowded hill station mainly by the mumbai people as a weekend retreat. all the languages like hindi english gujrati and marathi are normal spoken languages. you will really enjoy the delicious gujrati food and thali at Matheran as maximum tourists are gujratis. very few non vegetarians are frequenting hence gujrati thali is the best option. you will have no problem in eating and communicating at Matheran pp jain

Matheran is a small but beautiful hill station very near to mumbai at 2 hours distance.you can take a karjat local from CST or Dadar or Thane and get down at Neral .From Neral take cab which will take you in 15-20 minutes to matheran.matheran is a weeky retreat for mumbai people and with various points to see and horse riding being the only transportation available enjoy horse riding. matherans sunset point is one of the major attraction. hotels of all kinds with delicious food are plenty. good for a weekend present climate is excellent

Thanks for your query in Kiomoi, Matheran is a hill station, close to Mumbai, and not much famous as Religious Centre.
There are some small temples like every town and these are Ram Mandir on M.G. Road, Pisarmath Temple from period of King Shivaji, Temple near Charlotte Lake and Church Near B.J. Hospital.
Near by Matheran on Shahad station there famous Birla Mandir. From Shahad station this temple about 2 kms. One can reach to this temple from Ulhasnagar also.

Thanks for your query, best option to reach Neral from Karjat is Local Trains going towards MUMBAI CST. You will find train frequency of every 20 minutes during peak hours (morning 6.00 Am to 11.00 AM and evening 4 PM to 7.00 PM) and 30 minutes during non peak hours.
There are buses but it take longer time and frequency is also not good.
From Neral station you can get shared taxis upto Dasturi Naka (Taxi Stand). Beyond Dasturi Naka no vehicles are allowed, one has walk or hire horse to reah Matheran Market Place (Central part of Matheran City) Distance is about 3 kms.

Matheran was discovered by Hugh Malet in 1850. The British developed Matheran as a popular tourist resort.
At an elevation of around 800m (2,625 ft) above sea level Matheran is a hill station located about 100 km from Mumbai. Matheran literally means jungle on top. All vehicles (Except emergency vehicles) are banned here.
The only modes of transport are on Horseback, by man-pulled rickshaw, or on foot. Every one living in cities needs this sort of change once in a while.
Old British-style architecture has been preserved in Matheran and most structures are now heritage structures.
Matheran has been declared an eco sensitive region by the Union Environment Ministry (GoI).

If you can stay in Mumbai :-
You Can go matheran vai neral i.e if you are stay in mumbai then by local railway you can reach neral & from neral by road it will take 20-25 Minutes approximately & there are own vehicles allowed but you can drive by ur own till dasturi place where u park ur own car & enter Matheran from left gate (Car Parking Charges are Rs. 10 entry of car, & taxes of Rs. 25) & from there you go by walk or hire a horse (which is more comfortable) it cost u Rs. 150-200 per horse.

By Road : A very comfortable drive, by excellent expressway. From Pune travel on Old Mumbai Pune highway. After you come down the Khapoli ghat, watch the for the small lane that goes on right. You will see the green coloured board indicating this right turn.This is chowk.

From Borivli please come to Dadar and take a karjat local
and reach Neral. I 1.5 hours from Dadar. From Neral take a cab and reach matheran will take 20 minutes.
There is a toy train available from Neral to Matheran but the
