Surrounded by various archaeological sites, Champaner, located in Western India in Gujarat, is a beautiful city with a rich history. In the 8th century, the city was founded by the Chavda Dynasty, and he named the city after a friend of his who was known as Champaraj. The best time to visit the place would be during the winters as in the summers one would have to face the scorching heat. Along with historical destinations, Champaner has scenic hilltops and historical monuments. And today, Champaner is also home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Vadodara Airport is the closest to the city, which is situated 42kms away from Champaner. The Ahmedabad International Airport is 125kms away from Champaner, so that you can take a cab from the airport to your destination. There is also a railway station 53kms away from the city.
The ancient city of Champaner is best known for Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park. A walk around this site will give you a peek into the history of the Mughal Dynasty. Champaner has a number of famous mosques which were mostly built in the 15th century such as Jama Masjid, Sahar Ki Masjid, Gumbai Ki Masjid, Kevasa Masjid and Nagina Masjid. Jama Masjid is the perfect example of Hindu-Muslim architecture. Along with these magnificent mosques, there a several Hindu and Jain temples to visit and are well-preserved.
Champaner is situated in the Panchmahal district in Gujarat to the south of Pavagadh Hill. The hill rises to a height of 2600 ft, and it is made of reddish-yellow stone, which is considered an ancient rock formation in India. Winter is a pleasant time to visit Champaner as the temperature ranges from a minimum of 11°C to a maximum of 31°C. So December to February is the ideal time to travel to Champaner. The monsoon extends from June to September and gives relief from the summer heat.
At the base is the city of Champaner, and the hill station Pavagadh was built on a volcanic cone. The volcano had erupted 500 million years ago. With Champaner, the Pavagadh hill forms the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, which is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it has an area of 3,280 acres. It was the capital of Gujarat decades ago and was conquered by several dynasties, including the Rajputs, the Marathas, and the Mughals. They ruled until they saw the place decay. The locals in Champaner now speak Hindi and Gujarati.
When you visit Champaner, you must try the authentic Gujarati thali and some great street food! The festivals that are popularly celebrated are Navratri and Diwali. During Navratri, Garba is performed in groups with a live orchestra. Both the festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm.
