Overview
Digha is a one-stop destination for families that look forward to a fun weekend. The landscapes of Digha can also give you the joy you feel in places with little human influence and a largely unspoiled experience.
Beerkul was the original name for the area where Digha now stands. In Warren Hastings' writings (1780), this place was referred to as Brighton of the East. In 1923, an English merchant named John Frank Snaith moved here, and his writings gave the area a lot of prominences. He persuaded West Bengal Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy to transform the area into a beach resort. Near the Old Digha Main Gate, there is an old church. Alankarpur Digha is another name for this location. In New Digha, a new mission called Sindhur Tara has been established near Amravati Park. It is a Church where one can pray for the well-being of one's family and loved ones. Booking a local van rickshaw is the best method to get around. There are various places to visit that provide mental rejuvenation, such as Tajpur, the Odisa Border, and Science City.
It is just 183 kilometers (114 miles) from Kolkata/Howrah through Mecheda and 234 kilometers (145 miles) from Kharagpur, and this proximity has likely aided this small hamlet in establishing itself as a weekend retreat with a variety of hotels and tourist lodges. A motorway and a rail link connect Digha to Kolkata/Howrah through Tamluk. Many trains now travel between Digha and Howarh and other stations in eastern India, including the Howrah-Digha Super AC express, Tamralipta express, Kandari express, and EMU locals from Santragacchi through Mecheda and Tamluk. It's also part of the Contai Subdivision.
In Digha, there are primarily five seasons: summer, monsoon, autumn, winter, and spring. Summer begins in April and lasts until June. The monsoon hits in July and lasts up to September.
The 2011 Census points that the population of the beachside resort was about 8,159 people. Most of the residents here are Bengalis, locals belonging to the state of West Bengal. The Digha Beach is usually crowded during the Beach Festival when one can see many colors and vividness at the beachside.
The cuisine that you get to find here is mostly Bengali and East-Indian cuisine. Many cheap "rice" hotels throughout Digha serve cheap Bengali meals but of decent quality. Some more costly restaurants offer continental fare. Bengali fish curry rice is available for rupees 70-150. There is supper with egg curry-rice around rupees 75.
Another wonderful suggestion would be to buy the basic vegetarian meal at the hotel you visit and have it in your room. Fresh fish may be bought from Mohona, Digha's fish market in the morning, such as ilish, pomfret, parshe, and prawns. They are prepared at several 'Dada-Boudi'r' places surrounding the Sea Hawk. Have your normal vegetarian lunch or dinner with this fish. In the evenings, look for fried fish on the seafront in Digha. Those who are particular about cuisine and are searching for good fish preparations can go to Shankarpur, 14 km distant – they prepare their fish far better than Digha. Shankarpur's quality is equivalent to the Kolkata 5 star yet significantly cheaper, and the seafood as fresh as you might expect. The travel problem would be substantially offset.
Being a seaside city, Digha has plentiful options for tourists to indulge in. Some of the top-notch activities that you can enjoy here include swimming, sunbathing, volleyball, horse riding, and diving at New Digha.
Of all the places to visit here, tourists love to go to the Marine Aquarium and Centre Research (MARC). It was founded under the Seventh Five Year Plan in 1989. The Center's main purpose is to showcase the region's marine biodiversity, share its values with ordinary people, and research. The Temple of Lord Shiva, situated at Chandaneswar, is another top attraction. This site is just 8 kilometers from Digha, the centuries-old Lord Shiva Temple in Chandaneswar, along the border with Bengal and the Orissa. Chandaneswar is Odisha's portion. An annual fair is held here during the Bengali month of Chaitra. About half a million people visit the temple and pilgrims.
