Overview

Tawang is one of the most beautiful places in the northeast. The mountainous Tawang district with its headquarters in Tawang is located on the western tip of Arunachal Pradesh. The district covering an area of 2085 sq km has two international neighbors Bhutan in the southwest and Tibet in the north. In the east of Tawang is the Kameng and in the west, it is separated by the Sela ranges. Tawang with an altitude of 3500 m above sea level is mostly nature left as it is in all its pristine natural glory.
Tawang perhaps got its name in the 17th century from Reverend Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso, Tawang Monastery’s founder. It was named on the horse of the Lama Ta (Horse) Wang (blessed).
Of late Tawang strategically placed between China, Tibet and Myanmar have been attracting quite an unprecedented attention perhaps since the days of Chinese aggression of 1962. Tawang with its grand view of the grand Himalayan peaks, fluttering prayer flags, old Monasteries, a bustling bazaar and fabulous tracks is a delight for tourists most specifically those smitten by the bug of adventure. The best way to discover this quaint yet vibrating place is to take long solitary walks.

Best Time to Visit Tawang
As Tawang gets snowfalls during the harsh winter months it is best visited between March and October. Even during the summer months light woolens and Jackets are required.

ILP for visiting Tawang
For the Indian citizens, the last free frontier is the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border point of Bhalukpung. Beyond this point entry without permission that is the Inner line Permit is forbidden. Inner Line Travel Permits can be had from the Tourist Offices of Arunachal Pradesh at Delhi, Dibrugarh, Tezpur, and Guwahati. The Inner Line Permit a system in place from the British era is there to stop the influx of outsiders that can alter the ethnic identity of the original inhabitants.
