The history of Manipur dates back to the time when Burmese tried to invade northeastern side of India including Manipur that led to frequent clashes with the Nagas. Then in the year 1826, Manipur became a part of India. This happened according to a treaty between the British and Raja Jai Singh towards the end of the Indo-Burmese war. After India got independence in the year 1947, Manipur became a Union Territory. After some years it subsequently got statehood on 21st January 1972.
