"Kaziranga National Park - The World Heritage Site"

Located on the banks of the mighty river Brahmaputra in the far northeast in Assam, Kaziranga National Park covers an area of approximately 430 sq kms. The swamps and tall thickets of elephant grass make the park a perfect Habitat for the Indian one horned Rhino. Kaziranga was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1940 due to limitless poaching of the animal. A vast stretch of coarse, tall elephant grass, marshland and dense tropical forests, the park has managed to survive urbanization. Other major wild attractions include a large population of elephant, bison, swamp deer or barasingha, hog deer, sloth bear, tiger, leopard cat, otter, hog badger, capped langur, hoolock gibbon, wild boar and other animals. Kaziranga is also a haven for birds. Today Kaziranga is one of the wildlife sanctuaries in India where it’s possible to see the rhino out in open.

During the summers the temperature is high shooting up as high as 38°C. Generally, the summers are dry and windy starting from mid-February to May. The minimum temperature noted during the period is 7°C.

The monsoon season begins from May and ending up in September when the climate is warm and humid. Every year during the monsoons the Brahmaputra River overflows, flooding the low-lying grasslands and as a result, the animals migrate to higher areas within the Kaziranga National Park. These seven months i.e. May to October are considered as the offseason and the sanctuary is closed.

During the winter months i.e. from November to mid-February, the weather is mild and dry. The maximum and minimum temperatures during the season are observed to be 25°C and 5°C respectively. November to April is considered as the best time to visit the Kaziranga National Park.

Activities

Visit the Picnic spot: Visit the Kakochang waterfall which is 13 km from Bokakhat in the Jorhat district of Assam and is famous as a beautiful picnic spot.

Visit Numaligarh: Visit the ruins of the ancient Numaligarh (in the Golaghat district of Assam). These ruins are of great archaeological importance.

Walking & Trekking: Trekking through the lush coffee and rubber plantations of the nearby Karbi Anglong.

Shopping: Buy some bamboo made items, as they are the most beautifully made exclusive items of this place.

Visit the tribes: Visit the Karbi villages, meet the Karbi people, see the typical local architecture and observe their way of living.

Sightseeing: Spot the endangered trio of the park, the one-horned Rhinos, Hoolock Gibbons and the Wild Buffalo.

Bird Watching: Kaziranga is known for several species of birds including the migratory one. There are more than 250 species of birds found in the park.

Elephant Safari: Enjoy elephant safari to roam around the western range of Kaziranga national park. The elephant grass over this part of the park is tall enough to hide an elephant.

Jeep safari: Take Jeep Safari to explore the central region of the park. Tigers are one of the attractions of this area.

Activities: Engage in various types of activities like fishing, rafting, bird watching and elephant rides at the Park.

Safari Routes: You can go for either a jeep safari or an elephant safari. Generally, the vehicles of the Forest Department are not available for the tourists; jeeps can be hired at the Kohora Chowk or can be arranged through your hotel. There are three safari routes that one can opt from at the Kaziranga National Park.

Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit the national park is from mid-November to early April months. During the monsoons season, there is overflowing at the River Brahmaputra resulting in the flooding of the low-lying grasslands. Due to the flooding at the park, the animals migrate to higher areas within the Kaziranga National Park.

Expenses: Visiting Kaziranga independently can be expensive due to the two-tier price system, with different entry costs for Indian nationals and foreigners. There are separate charges for elephant safari and jeep rides from the lodges to the park entrance, as well as a system of variable camera fees.

Things to remember while in the park

What to do while in Kaziranga

1- One should wear clothes that cover the legs and arms fully as you may come in contact with wild plants and insects, leading to severe allergies. Another good option will be to wear layers of clothes in the jungle.

2- Be calm at all times in the jungle as this helps to relax the animals as well. Keep your excitement and enthusiasm under wraps.

3- Always stay with your jungle guide and the group.

4- Always carry the bare minimum things required. Avoid taking a lot of stuff in the jungle, some expeditions are exhausting and the extra equipments create a ruckus and also make you feel tired soon.

5- Carry some basic medicines, in case you are allergic to animal fur or dust.

6- Be prepared with a good camera and stock up on the extra film before embarking on the expedition. Also, consult the jungle guide before taking pictures or shooting videos.

7- One should carry insect and mosquito repellant creams, band-aids, water bottle, first aid kit, small torch, antiseptic creams, raincoats, personal hygiene products and the like

8- Maintaining absolute silence during elephant rides, during vehicle safari or wildlife watch towers is advised.

What not to do while in Kaziranga

1- One cannot predict how the animals will behave once you feed them and stop. Also, it changes the eating habits of the creatures of the jungle.

2- The jungle is home to several wild animals and it is best not to leave any litter behind, especially plastic.

3- Do is not ignorant or lax if you observe irresponsible behavior on part of the staff or visitors and report the authorities as soon as possible.

4- In an attempt to observe animals better, do not get too close. You will either scare them away or invite retaliation. Also, do not try to make friends with the wild animals in the jungle.

5- The jungle is not the place for hearty conversations and discussions. Keep conversation restricted to the safari/expedition and avoid talking in a loud tone.

6- Do not prance about collecting samples of stones, leaves and bird feathers in the jungle.

7- It is not wise to bring infants and small children in the jungle as they often find it hard to retain calm thereby scaring away the shy animals.

8- Do not create a ruckus while taking pictures and shooting videos. Keep the flash mode off and you will do everybody a favor.

9- Avoid using and leaving behind any combustible substances in the jungle.

10- Do not carry cellphones in the jungle or keep them switched off during the course of the safari.

11-Do not disturb or aggravate the animals by throwing stones and trying to grab their attention.

WildLife, Flora & Fauna

The flora at the Kaziranga National Park is comprised of three types: Alluvial inundated grasslands comprising of tall thickets of elephant grass and short grass

Tropical wet evergreen forests and tropical semi-evergreen forests.

But, the main characteristics of flora in Kaziranga are the dense and tall elephant grass intermixed by small swamplands left behind by the receding floodwaters of the river Brahmaputra. The marshes of Kaziranga National Park have an abundant cover of water lilies, water hyacinth, and lotus which provide a beautiful look to the surroundings of the park.

The common trees and shrubs are Albizia procera, Duabanga grandiflora, Lagerstroemia speciosa, Crateva unilocularis, Sterculia urens, Grewia serrulata, Mallotus philippensis, Bridelia retusa, Aphania rubra, Leea indica, and Lumbraculifera

Fauna at the Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. It is universally acknowledged for its importance as one of the most recent intact habitats of the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros. It is just because of the efforts taken by the conservation that the park today domiciles about 1,500 rhinos. Apart from rhinos it also acts as a home to over 70 percent of the world`s swamp or wild buffalo population. The rare swamp deer are also found here in Kaziranga. According to a recent census conducted in the year 2000, it is stated that Kaziranga sustains over 1,000 wild elephants and 450 species of wetland, grassland and woodland birds, of which 18 are globally threatened. The huge and continuously growing number of rhinos in the park is a matter of concern for the conservationists; it is felt that an epidemic could smear out the entire population. They have suggested that some of the rhinos should be shifted to the other sanctuaries and parks of Assam.

The moderate climatic conditions and the availability of food resources support the growth and survival of exceptional and diverse wildlife in Kaziranga National Park. Apart from the Indian One-horned Rhinos, Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary also has a sizable population of the Wild Buffalos and Indian Elephants. The national park also shelters about 15 species of India’s endangered mammals. The herd of wild and untamed elephants, migrating from the Mikir hills to the bheels (marshes or ox-bow lakes) is a common sight.

The main tourist attraction points in Kaziranga is undoubtedly the jungle safaris in the park - elephant safari, jeep safari and boat safari. Other than that one can visit tribal villages, tea and rubber plantations. If one has a day to spare than he can visit the Ahom Monuments and Temples at Sibasagar (160kms/3hrs) where the ruins of the 600 year old history of the Ahom rule in Assam exists.

Fees/Permits

Jeep Ride: Rs. 200 Entry fee. In addition to that, based on which part of the National Park one wants to visit, the jeep fare may vary. Central Range: Rs. 650, Western Range: Rs. 700, Eastern Range : Rs. 1000, Kalapahar Range: Rs. 1500. It is recommended to visit the Western and the Central Ranges both by Jeep and Elephant.

Elephant Ride: Rs. 300 (Central Range) and Rs. 400 (Western Range)per person. One can see Rhinos very up and close while on an elephant ride. There are two batches (0500-0600 Hrs and 0600-0700 Hrs)for the elephant ride. It is advisable to make the trip in the second slot during the months of winter as fog and late sunrise does not allow one to see anything during the first slot.

There is an extra charge of Rs. 50 for carrying a still camera.
